Staphylococci belong to the family micrococcaceae. They are Gram positive spherical cells usually arranged in grape-like clusters. The genus Staphylococcus has at least 30 species, widely distributed in nature, their normal habitats being the skin and the musous membranes of mammals and birds. The three main species of clinical importance are Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and, Staphylococcus saprophyticus. Staphylococcus aureus is coagulase positive, which differentiates it from other species.
